Want to know what the Diamond Family has been learning? Do our boys seem to always say "Nothing" when you ask them what they have been doing or learning lately?
Well, stay tuned to this page for updates!:)
There is much more learning going on besides what is here, much more than I
could
ever write on this page, but here is a snippet of some of our learning!:)
*Please be patient while the pictures load!:) Thank you!:)*

There is SO much I have to catch up
on with our learning BUT, I will begin from being in the now and back track and
fill in when I can! :) April - June 2006 Boy have we been busy these last few months!:) Much going on here. Let's see.... Chris, after four almost five months is free from working as a caregiver. Seems the woman he was working for said he was going such a helpful job that she felt so inspired that she is now taking care of herself and his services were free from being needed any longer!:) This has now given Chris time to focus on his computer business. Look for a website in the near future!:) Still working on a name but since Matthew and Anthony have called Chris 'Keek' since they were little (as when they were little they were free from being able to pronounce his name, thus it came out Keek and it has just kind of stuck as a nickname of sorts:) we have been tossing around Keek the Computer Geek around or something to that effect! Stay tuned!:) In other news, Chris in the last couple of months Chris has built an entire system from scratch for a client, and is currently working on what to do about his own computer (it seems to have been crashing due to memory going kaput after four and a half years of continuous use!) So we will see what our computer genius comes up with!:) Of course we all as a family enjoyed the science experiments surrounding the diet coke and mentos!:) We have also since tried Sunkist, Diet Pepsi, and regular coke all having the same results:) If you wish to know about the diet coke and mentos experiment if you have been free from hearing about it, visit http://www.eepybird.com The video of this experiment on their website is both amazing and funny to watch!:) Chris has fallen in love with playing baseball again. For a while he was not as interested in playing as he was in watching the Padres, which of course is our favorite team! GO PADRES!!! We have been to two games this season and Chris is practicing his pitching and hitting as he is considering joining a league either this fall or next spring. We have been spending lots of time at the batting cages, at the park all of us as a family catching and hitting baseballs and watching Chris WACK EM'! out of the ballpark at our local baseball park!:) Some highlights of things Chris has been learning about and is sharing with us as a family in learning are on the following websites: http://www.rapidnewswire.com/6306-growteeth-1620.htm Seems we can regrow teeth http://www.ananova.com/news/story/sm_1886274.html?menu World's Fastest Microchip http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2006/09jun_moonlets.htm We have discovered a new moon http://www.hiptechblog.com/2006/05/11/fancy-a-million-gigabtye-hard-drive The new Million Gigabyte Hard drive! http://technopedia.info/tech/2006/05/13/it-takes-a-lot-of-balls-to-make-a-video-like-this.html It took ALOT of Balls to make this! http://www.itnews.com.au/newsstory.aspx?CIaNID=32318 Internet is running out of room! http://www.innovations-report.com/html/reports/information_technology/report-28657.html Quantum Computers (This has been great learning combining our learning of Quantum physics and computers together) Weird Computer Cases....
March 2006 This month has sure gotten off with a BANG! in learning for the boys!:) Anthony has created his own game called swordball, complete with its own rules and everything. He created it out of a plastic sword he has and a ball of course:)! He says the game is a combination of baseball, golf, and soccer all rolled into one! He has been running all over the house playing his game and enjoying life!:) Matthew has made two new potions in his science concoctions that he believes will grow plants! We have tested it out on our bamboo and will report the results later in the month!:) Matthew and Anthony have created their own spy club, of which I am part of. More details to come on this!:) Chris in his continuous Life Long Learning of computers has discovered a way to make a new invention of using cooking oil (yes you read it right!:) to cool your computer rather than using fans! The website and video is pretty amazing! Check it out on http://www.tomshardware.com/2006/01/09/strip_out_the_fans/page2.html
February 2006
So far this month has been an awesome one! We celebrated Aaron's birthday by Chris taking parts from so old computers and also with that and the help of a wonderful gift from our dear friend Jenn (Thank you SO very much Jenn you are such a blessing we love you) of a flat panel monitor, we built Aaron a new computer for his birthday!:) Matthew and Anthony have made some really wonderful friends here in our cul-de-sac. Every afternoon they are out riding their scooters, or playing Beyblade, or playing basketball or baseball. Chris has even made a few girlfriends:) girls whom are friends LOL!!! Chris too, enjoys going out and playing basketball with the kids in the cul-de-sac. Sometimes, he just enjoys playing P-I-G or H-O-R-S-E with Matthew or Anthony or both of them if the other kids are not out:) I sometimes sit in Chris's room to look out his window and watch them playing and having a ball together! Matthew and Anthony have chosen to share a room in our new house and so we have gotten them a bunk bed which they love! They are also enjoying the little bit of extra money (a learning investment) we have spent to place digital cable in their rooms. In addition to loving Toon Disney and all the learning from that channel, they also have the discovery kids channel, discovery science channel, nick toons, history channel. Infact we just watch about black holes in the universe the other night on the science channel which was quite fascinating. And also on the history channel we learned about how technology has come from the biggest math processing machines of 10 feet long to the mini computerized cell phones we have today. We also learned how the universe began and the animals that lived here on this planet when it first began and so much more. Yes, our boys believe in Santa.:) For that matter so do I. The magic of the holiday season and the spirit of what Santa represents in the magic of giving and love, still resides within me and always will. I even collect Santas. We as a family do not believe in Christmas for the commercialism, or the religious aspect, although we do study, recognize, and celebrate all religions, we believe in Christmas, in Santa as a family for the spirit and magic of love, something we feel can be embraced all year round. Which is why I personally have parts of my santa collection in the house up all year round:) For Christmas from Santa, Matthew received a Wizardology book and thus has been studying all about wizards and dragons. Anthony received a dictionary as one of his presents from Santa and delights in looking up words to learn to spell them. Chris, one of the things he received from Santa was a Sci-Fi Movie Stargate, which we have not seen yet but plan to soon. All three of our boys love Science Fiction. The Sci-Fi channel is a favorite in our house, as is many book on CD and tape which we listen to in the car regularly:) We also have been enjoying reading! Matthew has finally come to where he actually feels confident enough to say with confidence that he CAN read:)!!! This is so huge because we have always known he can and he can read quite well but because he was told for 2 years when he was in school that he could not read and had to have a reading specialist, he has never built up the confidence until completely to say that he can read and really mean it:) He too has always felt that he was less than because Anthony is reading and Matthew was but not as well he felt. Once he was able to realize that learning is not about competition and that he will learn when he is ready to and that we all learn different things at different rates and that this does not make one person better than another, just that they learned something and you have learned something, once he really understood this, his confidence began to bloom!:) So this is a huge accomplishment for him! Yahoo Matthew! We are so proud of you!:) And speaking of reading, does anyone remember the book Mouse Soup By Arnold Lobel? It was one of my favorite books as a child that I read and my mom would read to me:) Well, Matthew asked me if I would read it to him the other night and I said sure. Anthony came in during the book and listened to us read as well. So we read it, and afterwards, Matthew asked can we read it backwards? and I said Sure why not? Well what he meant was to read it like as we learned in our learnings of world religions that the Hebrew Bible or Torah is read which is say page 100, then 99, 98, 97, and so on. Well, instead of reading it one page at a time, we ended up reading it backwards one WORD at a time. Thus the sentence the old lady became lady old the, which had Matthew and Anthony and me for that matter busting up laughing. We read all 64 pages of Soup Mouse, of I mean Mouse Soup one sentence at a time backwards! We had a blast! And almost to the beginning or I mean end of the story, Matthew said "Gee Mommy, I never knew reading could be this much fun!" And he is right, what fun it was!! So many times we think that things should be written and said and read in a certain way, but who says? Just because someone years ago said so, does not mean we are not free to learn and explore it in a new way! And in doing so, our boys made a connection to reading, to love of reading, to learning and love of learning that connection that will last a lifetime:) Chris this month began a new job as a part of his life's purpose (in addition to his computer business) in which he is a caregiver. He works weekends as a caregiver for the County of San Diego, assisting older men and women (55 +) to learn the computer. He also assists with domestic responsibilities as well. He is currently work for a 63 year old woman both instructing her on the computer and with domestic responsibilities. She has just been raving about his work, about how efficient, helpful, wise he is. She has said that his out of the box thinking even helped her not only save money but pain as well. She is allergic to chlorine and so when she would take a shower, she would burn her eyes with the chlorinated water in the shower. She had been spending $70 a month on a special filter that only lasts a month to take the chlorine out and so instead Chris suggested that she use goggles. He even went with her to help her pick some out which were only $4. As she said it so well that his out of the box, sharp thinking saved her so much money and pain that she is so thankful to him for being there for her. Kudos to Chris on assisting others in life:) You are such an amazing young man and we love you:) Anthony has been doing research on his game that he is designing with the stage cast creator software called super battle. It is a game mixed between Yu-gi-oh, Digimon, and Beyblade all rolled into one. He also has another game called Sonic Blast. His game is quite complex and the math equations necessary to program this game are way beyond me! He says it is SO easy! Boy, I am glad it is for him because I am clueless when it comes to those things and he learns way more than I do on it:) Way to go Anthony!!! You are awesome!:) We love you!:) Valentine's Day, or Our Day of Love was a wonderful one! To our family though, everyday is a day of love so we make an effort to make everyday a special and loving one, Valentine's Day as well. Our children have learned that although it is nice to set aside one special day a year to show our love to others, that love is continuous and therefore we should not limit it to just one day a year, we should BE love all day everyday to everyone. Imagine what our earth will be like if we all to BE love always in every moment:) And speaking of our mother earth, this brings about two jokes that Aaron learned from the cheese stick wrappers that we buy (see learning does occur anywhere with anything even on cheese stick wrappers! LOL!) and shared with us as I was writing this to all of you out there online and here they are..... What type of fishing pole does mother earth use to go fishing?..................The North and South Pole!!! HA HA LOL!!! and last but not least.....What part of your body has the most rhythm?...............Your ear drum......get it your ear drum!!! HA HA LOL!!! Ok, we are off to a field trip to Walmart to find a Beyblade rink (The boys LOVE Beyblades, more info on Beyblades can be found at http://www.beyblade.com) I will write more later!:) June 2005 to January 2006 Wow! It is sure been a while since we updated our page here! We have had so much happening in our lives since last June. I will see if I can recap the learning from then til now. Over the summer 2005, we spent many a days at the beach learning all about the various sea creatures of the earth. Matthew of course still is enamored with the stingray his favorite, however, he did get a taste of what a jellyfish is like as he got stung by one over the summer while bodyboarding! OUCH! Baking Soda to the rescue! It was a wonderful experience in the learning about Jellyfish and first aid! We began our own homelearning parkday group and enjoyed many a Wednesday with friends, exploring new parks. Our favorite over the summer was Cottonwood Creek Park, named so for its beautiful creek that runs along side and through the park and the wonderful nature trails. All of the boys are continuing to learn through the summer until now their Math, strategy skills, language skills, reading and so much more through playing Yu-Gi-Oh. Matthew and Anthony during the summer also help sales for some of their cards and made so extra money. It makes me so happy to see the continuous bonding relationship that it has created between Aaron and the boys.:) For Matthew's 9th Birthday, we had a homelearning parkday at the bowling alley! What a blast that was! I will post pictures up here as soon as I can go back and find them. The summer also brought us all learning on how to clear our lives of unwanted "stuff". We began a 7 month long cleaning process in which we went room by room and re-arranged, re-organized, and gift things that we no longer need to others whom may have a better use for them. Since moving out of our house into a smaller house back in 2004, we have literally gotten rid of about 3 houses worth (no joke we had that much "stuff") of "stuff" that we either were no longer using, did not want, or had no use for to begin with! Aaron jokingly says that we still have too much stuff!:)LOL! Some other learnings over the summer included: Chris of course loves this website on the history of computers http://www.computerhistory.org/exhibits/online_exhibitions.html Being that the boys love learning all about mummies, we learned about a 4,000 mummy. The article can be found at http://www.nytimes.com/2005/09/10/nyregion/10papyrus.html Matthew and Anthony also love learning how to using Movie Maker and other programs to program their own music and videos. The boys also love spending time reading and writing over the internet in emails to each other and to Aaron and I. Also, IMing (Instant Messaging) friends, each other, and me:) The fall brought about many changes in our lives this last year. In the beginning of Fall in September, I had emergency surgery to have my gallbladder removed. Much learning went on here for all of us on how to deal with mom being out of commission while she was healing! During the fall, we had a very close friend of ours pass away in November. He was like a god father to the boys and we know that while he is still with us in spirit, his physical presence is missed here. The was much learning about death, the death process, what happens to us when we cross over and such. This learning continued on into the winter as our beloved Bubbe (the boys great grandmother and our grandmother) passed away as well. We know too that she is always with us in spirit but her physical presence is too greatly missed by all. Our learning of the meaning of life and the circle of life continued also with knowledge that another close friend of ours whom is only 25 years old, had been diagnosed with a terminal, inoperable brain tumor and has given only 9 to 12 months to live. These changes in our lives have given us all pause to be grateful for life and how precious it is, and to ask ourselves and each other why we are here on this earth and how we can better be in service to others while we are here. So, there has been much learning for us all this past fall and winter in our family. The fall was not without learning
fun though! Of course, being that we celebrate Halloween for just the
sheer fun, we had our 3rd ever Haunted House! Halloween also brought us learning of hangman as a form of spelling, halloween style http://dedge.com/flash/hangman/ Thanks mom for the link!:) Other learnings in the Fall include: Mars coming the closet to earth in October! This was an awesome site to observe, we made a chart on this too!:)
Matthew and Anthony both too love to sketch. I will try to take pictures of the sketches and post them up here soon. We spent some time with a close friend of ours whom is an artist and she instructed the boys on various techniques. We spent many hours learning this as the nights grew colder and the days shorter:) The Late Fall and Early Winter also brought a surprise to us. We were asked to move by our landlord because he wanted to sell the house we were living in and there was no way we could afford to buy, thus we spent most of the holiday season packing, house hunting, and subsequently moving on New Year's, which is another reason I have not posted much in recent months here. All of our boys got to learn many a lesson in terms of budgeting, loans, the moving process, how to handle utilities when moving, the expenses of it etc. I suppose our summer cleaning that we did was in preparation for our move!:) Anthony spent many a days doing multiplication of 2 and 3 digit numbers during this time. Matthew began to read The Grapes of Wrath during this time. The Winter Season also brought about Chris's graduation from our Life Long Learning Academy High School. Chris will now be embarking on his computer business on building, selling and providing technical support to customers, and assisting others with computer instruction. Chris accelerated his learning being that he is self taught and even though he officially graduated, he will be continuing to learn through life:) This High School diploma gifts him with the ability to take this learning to newer and higher levels as he so chooses!:) Congratulations Chris!:) We love you and are so proud of you:) Our Christmas thus was small and quiet. We spent it at home this year, rather than going to see everyone in our family due to all of the packing, house hunting, and living out of boxes for almost a month!:) We had a small 3 1/2 foot tree and we able to find enough decorations in the packing and such to decorate the tree and put up our stockings. Our boys were not even the slightest bit disappointed in not being able to decorate with all of our lights and decorations or a big tree or a bunch of presents. Because we have all come to a place where us just BEING together is what matters. That all of the extra trimmings, presents, etc. are nice to have but what really matters is the love that we share and being together. Our New Year's Eve was spent in our new home. We did sparklers and watched the ball drop on 2006....a new beginning for all of us:) January brought a very special month of Love into our new home. We took the first three weeks unpacking (and yes, getting rid of even MORE stuff, which we are finally complete on!:) and were almost done, enough to go up on the 16th to visit our family to celebrate January birthdays in our families (My mom's, My Brother's, Anthony's, Aaron's Mom's, and Aaron's - YES all of them are born within the same 2 week period from January 17th to February 3rd in addition to an Aunt and a cousin also born in that same time frame! Oy Vey!!!LOL!), and then on the 22nd gift our dear friend whom has the terminal cancer I spoke of earlier, with a wonderful 25th birthday party. It was like our own Make a Wish Foundation for our dear friend as one of her dearest wishes is to have the birthday party that she never had as a child. It was a faerie birthday party to remember. Thank you to all whom helped make her birthday one she will remember always. We love you so very much Jenn and we know that you will be with us again for birthday 26!:) For Anthony's 8th we celebrated
his birthday by taking him to his choice - the Irvine Spectrum where
they have the Ferris Wheel,
Chris then ended up gifting some of his Christmas money to Matthew a week later so that Matthew could buy a Beyblade for himself. Gifting others has been a learning theme in this last year for us as a family. I can remember many times over the last months when we have been in a restaurant like Denny's watching Matthew and Anthony trying so hard to win a stuffed animal from their crane game machine as the boys call it, and then they will gift that stuffed animal to the little boy or girl whom is maybe 3 or 4 and cannot get up to the controls to win one for themselves, they will gift it to that child. Or Chris as he gifted a necklace that he made originally for himself, that to our very dear friend, or how each place we go how our boys will gift others going through the door by holding it for them. All without Aaron or I ever having to say a word, they just do so of their own free will out of the kindness of their hearts. These are the times that Life Long Learning shines so brightly for me and makes me proud that we celebrate this way of life. May 2005 Well, in the last month and a half, we have had many things occur. The boys have learned much about the Renaissance Era, as we went to a Renaissance Faire last month. The learned how to hold a real ax, sword fight, how to be sold or traded as they did in that time era and more! We have been on trips to the library and have been reading and learning all about dinosaurs, dragons, and about the world records in many things. We checked out the Guinness Book of World Records and have learned all sorts of things in there. That started with Matthew wanting to see if he can be the world record holder for the biggest chewing gum wad! One day about 3 weeks ago, we spent the whole day reading! From about 10 a.m. until Aaron got home at about 7 p.m. that night. We read a whole Goosebumps book from start finish Matthew, Anthony, and I, all 119 pages! WOW!! What fun-filled reading fest that was! The only break we took that day for a bite to eat lunch! Chris turned 14 just this past week! For his birthday, he wanted for himself and his brother's to have bicycles, so we got each of the boys bikes. Chris now rides the almost three miles to our Shamanism class every Tuesday in addition to riding around here everyday just about now. He is so proud of his bike and how well and far he can ride. Matthew only took one day and a half to ride without training wheels. Anthony is still trying but we know he will get there soon! In April, we all got to learn something that was an opportunity of a lifetime. Mira Costa College sponsored a space program in which the boys got to and Aaron and I as well got to view Jupiter and Saturn through high powered telescopes! It was absolutely amazing! You could actually see the rings on Saturn up close as if they were right there in front of you. And we got to see Jupiter's moons too! It was a spectacular site! We missed seeing the moon because it was too bright to see that night. The Astronomer we met, her name was Julie, she had said had she positioned the telescopes over for us to see the moon that it would end up burning our eyes because it was so bright! Really cool stuff!:) We also had a field trip to a local thrift store recently, in which Chris found a disco ball which needed fixing that he picked up for a few dollars, took it all apart and fixed the electric parts in it all by himself and now it runs beautifully!:) Just yesterday, Matthew made his own candle from scratch and now in cooking Matthew and Anthony have been working on fractions making pudding. Matthew figured out the other day while making pudding that 2 cups of evaporated milk equal one small can of that same milk in ozs. We could not find our one cup measure so he used our 1/3 cup measure instead which made for a more complicated mathmatical fractions learning. There is more but I will have to write more later as I am tired!:) Sunday, March 27, 2005 Happy Easter! What a BEAUTIFUL day it was today! Could not have asked for a more perfect day today. The Easter Bunny came and boy was HE messy! He left carrots ALL over the house. And lots of Easter eggs to find as well. Chris ended up enjoying his Easter basket (an candy!:) so much that he let Matthew and Anthony find the eggs the Easter Bunny hid. It was a tie, both Matthew and Anthony won! 18 eggs found each! They loved all of the goodies they got - egg and carrot playing cards, Chinese yo-yo's, regular yo-yo's, bubbles that are in a soda bottle that when you shake them they bubble up like the old soda called 'Bubble Up', egg spinning tops, jelly beans, stuffed animal Easter Bunny's, Reese's candy eggs.....and on and on!:) Of course after the egg hunt, we made together our favoritest treat of all for Easter that we have every year.....Egg Salad sandwiches for brunch! Then, after we all had a bit of a nap from being up so darn early this morning! LOL! We worked on some fractions in Math as we made from scratch homemade chocolate chip cookies! YUM YUM!!!:) It was a whole family event!:) Anthony even got flour ALL over Aaron! LOL! While eating our chocolaty treats, we called our Auntie Mickee as she is in the hospital ill to wish her a Happy Easter and let her know we were thinking of her! We hope you are well really soon Auntie Mickee!:) We also talked to Uncle Marc and Grandpa Dave to see how they were feeling from their surgery's both of them! We hope you are both in tip top form real soon as well!:) Aaron then for dinner BBQ'd his world famous hotdogs! I so LOVE his hotdogs on the grill!:) and we watched a family movie, and now all are asleep, except me as I write this!:) Sorry Poppie, Grandma, Uncle Vinnie and Aunt Rachel I forgot to call! I know you were at Aunt Rachel's family's at the park! Happy Easter and we love you! We will call you tomorrow!:) It was a busy and long day for us!:) Saturday, March 26, 2005 We missed the children's Native American class that the boys were supposed to go to today because we all over slept!:) that is ok, because between last weeks Equinox ceremony and the fact that the next drumming circle next month I found out the boy can come to, we will make up for it!:) We went back to Moonlight beach instead this afternoon, so that Anthony could show Aaron how well he went on the climbing structure at the playground there. It has this like these giant steering wheels one right next to the other that you can travel on almost like monkey bars but these rotate. Such gymnastic strength that boy has!:) Matthew built a wall out of rocks that the ocean water would not penetrate he said, which he was right it did not. Aaron and Chris rolled around wrestling like two kids in the sand pushing each other and playing and having a ball!:) I love it when I watch them play together like they are the best of friends!:) I of course brought the camera to get pictures, but Aaron gave me dead batteries from his CD player! UGH! Oh well! Next trip! Oh yeah, on the way from the car to the beach, we got attacked by a swarm of bees, ALL of us! Boy was THAT scary! I know bees are a sign of working together as a family, which we do, but THIS was a bit ridiculous!:) LOL! None of us got stung or anything but we did come close. Good thing I did not as I am allergic something awful! Matthew found a pet friend to take home to add to his nurturing of animals. Anthony has taken it under it's wing too. It is a sea mussel of which we researched and found out their sea life scientific name as Bivalve Mollusks. All of the info on the sea muscle can be found here at this site: http://www.palaeos.com/Invertebrates/Molluscs/Bivalvia/Bivalvia.html. Anthony and Matthew wanted to know if mussels have ears and through our research, we have found that they do not. They do however, have a stomach, a heart, a kidney, and yes a butt!:) LOL! The boys thought that this was pretty funny as they had NO IDEA that mussels could have butts!:) LOL!!! The joys of learning of sea life creatures and science Diamond style!:) LOL! We dyed tonight! :)LOL! Opps! I mean we dyed our Easter Eggs tonight before bed. Anthony had to make sure that everyone is in bed so we all don't miss the Easter bunny.....so I write this and am hurrying off to sleep now!:) Friday, March 25, 2005 Today is Good Friday. In our continuing in life to learn about various religions and cultures, our life study of religions and cultures, we learned about what this day represents within various faiths and how it is celebrated. We also went to a park day of some old friends of ours that we had not seen in a long time down in Encinitas at Moonlight Beach. The boys explored the rock caves that over look the ocean and also got to build with the gazillion bamboo sticks still placed all over the beach. There were many people building teepees, huts, and many geometric creations just like the boys were!:) Anthony in his quest to learn to sky dive and hang glide, came up with the ingenious way to try to up on the totally made out of sand cliff that is there at the beach. He took a long stick of bamboo and jumped using it as his wings. Matthew, over off to the side digging his sand cave in the huge cliff, then joined Anthony and he and Matthew used Matthew's jacket along with the stick of bamboo to crate their own version of a hang glider! Science, ingenuity, and gravity unfortunately at it's best. They were both quite excited to fly as far and as high as they did, proving that gravity need not apply (totally anyway!:) Later in the evening, we learned of a place called Easter Island. Fascinating ruins about 2,000 miles off of the Coast of Chile! The boys each read on their own to me one and a half pages of on of the websites we found! I only had to assist them with the Polynesian words that even I had trouble learning. We also learned of the language spoken there (Rapanui) and some of the words and phrases of that language, such as What is your name? - Ko ai tou ingoa? . Matthew wanted to know what type of currency they used and we discovered that it is Chilean pesos and US dollars that they use there. Chris loved the amazing stone carvings that have lasted so many thousands of years there. Now the boys all want to go to Easter Island!:) More information about what we discovered about Easter Island can be found here at the following websites: http://www.mysteriousplaces.com/Easter_Island/index.html http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/easter/explore/ http://www.lib.utexas.edu/maps/islands_oceans_poles/easterisland.jpg http://www.netaxs.com/~trance/rapanui.html http://www.netaxs.com/~trance/phrases.html (The Rapanui language) http://www.rongorongo.org/vanaga/a.html (The Rapanui language dictionary)
Wednesday, March 23, 2005 No parkday today :( it is raining, so we were home today. We had our friends Marie, Vidal, and their girls Jasmine and Robyn over today though. Chris is feeling SO much better. We spent the day learning about crystals, herbs, aromatherapy, and more information about the baby hamsters. They will be 2 weeks old tomorrow. Some of them are starting to move about the cage, although not all of them have their eyes open just yet. Momma Claire keeps trying to put her youngsters back in their nest, but they keep wanting to explore. One in fact got all the way up to the top of the cage and was scared to come back down. Daddy Hammy stayed in the nest sleeping with the rest of the babies while Momma Claire went to the rescue and got the baby back to the nest. Later in the evening, since Chris was not quite up to it and Matthew wanted to stay home, Anthony and I went with Marie, Vidal, Jasmine and Robyn to the Indian Store in Escondido. We explored all of the crystals, herbs, and dream catcher making items that are there. Anthony got a rose quartz diamond shaped gem and I got some leather and sage. Tuesday, March 22, 2005 Anthony has developed a passion for hang gliding and sky diving. About a month ago or so he created his own chalk pavement pictures out in the backyard that he sketched himself and imagined jumping into them and enjoying the time in his own paradise. A form of meditation actually. It reminded me much of Mary Poppins when the do that in the movie. Anthony's was of Palm trees and an island and it was just beautiful. It ended up a day or so later being washed away by the rain, but the memory will last a lifetime. So we did some research on sky diving and hang gliding. We have a catalog coming to us with more information as he wants to save up to be able to go. Sounds like Daddy is going to be in for some fun!:) LOL!!! Mommy is in NO WAY doing THAT one, sorry!:) LOL! Matthew created a program on his computer today which enabled his dog picture to bark and say hello. Chris is still recovering from the flu. Poor guy missed Shamanism class tonight, his first miss since we began. Tonight I was feeling a bit better from the last few days and we all sent healing energy for Chris tonight in class. We did more work on learning how to perform the Temescal so we can go out to help others to learn whom wish to. Yaya Colette Ladyhawk gifted me the remaining herbs we used in class tonight so that I was able to boil them on the stove for Chris tonight when I got home. In the herbal mixture was Black Koohosh and a number of other herbs for the respiratory system which really helped Chris to heal tonight when I got home. Bless Yaya Ladyhawk!:) Monday, March 21, 2005 Today was a sick day. Chris has come down with the flu and I have a gum infection, so today was a sick day. Even sick days have there learning moments. Learning when the body needs rest, fluids and food, to keep us in perfect form and function. And how water since our body is 90% made of water, how important drinking water is to flush out the toxins in our bodies:) Nutrition was the topic of learning today! Matthew also brought to me a rose he trimmed from the front yard today. We placed it in water in a bowl floating. I shared with him the story of how my adoptive Grandma June when she was alive, used to have in her house tons upon tons of bowls out all of the time with roses just like that and gardenias as well!:) and how much I loved to walk into her house and smell the aromatic scent of the flowers and how it used to make me feel better when I was down or ill. So we learned of how aromatherapy can place a part in helping the body when it is ill Sunday, March 20, 2005 Aaron and Chris left early to go duel at a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament up in Long Beach. Chris ended up like 84th I think! His deck is much improved!:) He has been working on many mathematical strategies using the correct balance of cards and equations to advance his deck to the point it is. We are all so proud of him!:) A good friend of ours, Laurie's cat Puddha, crossed over earlier this week. She was hit by a car. So Matthew, Anthony, and I went to Laurie's house today our by the beach to Puddha's Celebration of Life Ceremony. It was wonderful, a very happy occasion. The boys and I learned today the value of when a person or a pet crosses over, rather than being sad over the loss, that that person or pet is always with us in spirit and that we should be celebrating their life and what a blessing their time was with us on this earth. After the celebration of life ceremony, in continuing our learning of other cultures, we traveled to the beach for a traditional Native American drumming ceremony to celebrate the Spring Equinox. The boys learned of the Native American Solstice ceremony, what animal totems represent the North, the South, the East, and the West, as well as a walk around the ring of fire and place our intentions for spring growth and renewal into the fire of life. At one point it was so very sweet as Matthew and Anthony were huddled by my feet in the blanket we brought, singing and each one of them tapping on either one of the bongo drums in musical rhythm and harmony. Saturday, March 19, 2005 Chris and I attended our Drumming class tonight. We really enjoyed it. We actually got a set of bongo drums from the head drummer there for only $10! Chris loves them as do Matthew and Anthony. It was wonderful to see our friend Whitney who is in town for a week or so from Northern California. We got to spend the evening with her at the drumming circle and with our Yaya Norma (Yaya means grandmother in the Native American tradition) Friday, March 18, 2005 It was so sweet today when looking in on the hamsters, one of the hamsters got out of the nest today. Anthony came in to get me to let me know that the baby was trying to climb up the blue tube and could not because he/she still cannot see and is too tiny yet to climb that far! And since we know that the cannot see just yet, we at first felt so bad knowing we could not reach in to help it for fear of our scent being on him/her then Claire might reject the baby. But all was not lost, Claire the super momma she is, sensed us near and went to the rescue!:) As the protective momma, she climbed down the top of the cage where her and Hammy were sleeping together in their comfy cottage up there, and she grabbed the baby by his/her neck and carried it back down the blue tube and right back to the nest as if to say "Come on little one, let's get back to your brothers and sisters!" It was so cute and so sweet. At first when Anthony saw Claire carrying her baby in her mouth and she was moving the baby with her paws and mouth to get it in the right position, he said "Oh no Mom! She going to eat the baby!" And I said, no wait, just watch!:) and then he and Matthew saw Claire caring for her young! Matthew said to Claire "Thank you Claire for showing us how to care for your babies!" It just was the most adorable thing ever!:) Chris, the big strong young man helper he is, I SO love him today. I love him everyday but today he was such a help! Yesterday at our friend's house I started having an endometriosis attack and it escalated into much pain at 3:30 in the morning, so today I was having a hurting day. Chris cleaned all of the downstairs for me ~ he vacuumed, picked up and organized all of the toys in the den, folded all of the laundry, and also did a couple of loads of laundry!:) He was such a help!:) All without me asking him too as well! I know I have said this a thousand times today Chris, but thank you and I love you!:) Anthony at dinner tonight did some more multiplication tables! He learned the trick that Chris showed him with 11 x 9, to just do 1 x 9 twice!:) Or I showed him that if you see what the number is that is being multiplied by 11, that that number twice is the answer. So if in this case it is 9 being multiplied by 11, then two 9's or 99 is your answer!:) Matthew, he read the free coupons to the zoo he found! He is so excited! So it looks like we will be going back to the zoo soon! We went last October and got to see so much! But we missed the elephants because the zoo was closing so we will have to go back to see them soon!:) Matthew came in tonight and said he wants to do some fractions work and geometry using cooking as he wants make his great grandmother Evelyn's famous sugar cookies! So I have to see if we have the recipe somewhere....if not.....Oh MOM!!!!! :) HELP!!!:) LOL! A shopping we will go, a shopping we will go, high ho the dairy oh, a shopping we will go!:) Thursday, March 17, 2005 Happy St. Patrick's Day! In year's past we have done the green eggs, green water, green Sprite, green milk and so forth, but today since went to a friends house for a playdate and were gone most of the day, the Leprechauns took the day off at our home!:)
Today the hamsters are officially a week old! Yippee! Tried to get in there to get a picture today but Clair was nursing so we did not wish to disturb them! They do look so adorable though. All of them are getting more and more fur on them. Matthew could not find anything green to wear today so he drew a green line on his hand in washable marker so he would not get pinched! The rest of us did wear green. Although I gotta say that Aaron's shirt was that yellow green color so I think we should have pinched him and Matthew since they cheated! LOL! While at our friends house today on a playdate, my friend's daughter, Michelle, was showing Matthew and Anthony again some basic piano playing steps. It makes me long for having a keyboard or a piano in the house again. Not that I could play very well BUT, I would love to re-learn again!:) Anthony created his own Math and Spelling word pages this evening. He came in and said, "Mommy, can you tell me some words to spell and I will write them and see if I can get them right?" So, he did two pages worth of that. Probably about 25 words, and out of which he spelled correctly about 15. He had like 8 more that he missed by one letter. Not bad!:) He wrote words like water, penny, shell, light, and so on.... Then he asked me to do the same thing with him with multiplication tables. So he did a page of those, about 10 or so and got them all correct! :) He did 10 x 10, 3 x 6, 9 x 2, and so on!:) Matthew created one of his inventions today. He recycled paper, rubber bands and tape to make a really cool tree sculpture. Lots of geometry and ingenuity
there!:) This is how it came out!
Matthew is growing rock crystals right now. He loves to watch them grow. We will get pictures when they are big enough. He is also looking around more and more at his world and reading everything in sight ~ signs, cereal boxes, magazines. Tonight it was the various words, sentences, and phrases in the menu at Applebees where we went to celebrate St. Patrick's Day! The more he is out and about in the world, the more he reads and is learning to love to read! He also loves to learn to spell words by doing word searches, one of his favorite things to do lately! :) Chris, he is busily preparing his mathematically precisioned based Yu-Gi-Oh deck for a regional tournament that he and Aaron are going to on Sunday. That has been his main focus this week!:) He has also helped Matthew and Anthony build their decks with some special cards to give them a mathematical strategy as well. Chris has also been working on learning php computer web design stuff (I have NO CLUE what it is but he sure does!:) LOL!) so he has taken down our faerie beads jewelry website for the time being about a month or so ago so he has a website to work on. We also learned today of the importance of friends and of health. Today our good friend's daughter had a seizure. It was the first time she has ever had one and so it scared us all. We learned about what a seizure is and what can happen to the body when one occurs depending on the type and severity of the seizure. The boys were looking forward to having Anna over tomorrow for a playdate, but we understand why she cannot. She is alright, we talked to her this evening, but she will need the weekend to rest, so that maybe Monday she will come over. We love you Anna and are glad to know you are alright!:)
Wednesday, March 16, 2005 Homelearning Parkday Ahoy! Felicita Park here we come! What a day we had today! Digging in the sand trying to make the hole as big as last weeks hole Here are the pictures!
Anthony was digging on one end and Matthew on the other. Several of the other kids came and joined in together with them with their shovels. In the end, they almost made a hole almost the size of last weeks!:) We did not make it down to the creek today, because like a nut, I left the house without my shoes! Ok...Ok! Go ahead and laugh! I went to carry some light stuff to the car and have Chris carry the rest, which he did and he also came out with my purse! So I never walked back in the house and in the flurry of things did not realize until we got half way to the park that I had no shoes on! LOL! Oh well! Next week we will go down to the creek! Anthony made himself an Art Book a few days back, and so tonight, Aaron was showing him how to write the words Written By. Anthony usually will write authored by and illustrated by, but tonight Aaron showed him another new way to write it!:) Tuesday, March 15, 2005 Today we just jumped in the car and went! We ended up at Buccaneer Beach in Oceanside today. The beach was covered in Bamboo. Yes real bamboo!:) Scattered all over the beach. Our first thought is that it is Tsunami bamboo. We actually brought home a piece and it is about 8 1/2 feet long. It was about 10 or so feet long, but we had to break a piece off a bit to fit it in the car! As it was, we ended up sticking it out of the sunroof of my car!:) We brought about 25 sticks or so home in all. The boys all took pieces and made teepees and all kinds of other stick houses and creations with the bamboo. The boys even used pieces to build a wall with them out of the bamboo and sand. Matthew and Anthony were building while Chris and I were sitting and talking and all of the sudden we hear "WHOA!" from both Matthew and Anthony. We look over and see them covered in small rolling ocean waves and their sand building being swept away to sea! The boys were caught off guard by the cold water thinking they had moved back enough to build!:) We all just laughed and laughed! Then they built again! We also found what looks to be a crab or lobster shell. Matthew also found a black speckled rock which sparkles in the sun and looks like that of Obsidian actually. Since Matthew loves to research natural stones, we will be doing this soon!:) He also found 2 muscle half shells. We rescued a ladybug that we found in the sand as well and took it over to some nearby bushes so that it would be able to eat and remain alive. We did take about 10 of the pieces of bamboo into the Shamanism class Chris and I go to on Tuesday's and gifted them to each member in the class that evening. When turning to gift a piece to one of the ladies in our class, she looked at me and said, "This is Tsunami bamboo isn't it?" What awesome confirmation of what we were talking about while there at the beach today!:) Sunday, March 13, 2005 Yum! Yum! Today we went to the Natural History Museum to see the Chocolate Exhibit! AND they had chocolate tasting as well! 6 different delectable chocolates to choose from, including hot cocoa! We got to see how Chocolate is made starting from the rainforest with the Cacao beans all the way through the production of chocolate! Being the chocolate lovers we are this was a REAL treat! We usually go for free Tuesdays to the Natural History Museum, the hands-on Science Museum and all the other wonderful museums during the month, but since the chocolate tasting is only on Sundays and the exhibit is only there until May 1st, it was a once in a lifetime treat! Well worth the GEE we splurged on!:) You can check out what we saw, did, and learned by visiting these following websites:
There is also an interactive on how chocolate
is made here at
We also got to see the Fossil Hunters exhibit which was really cool! We found 3.5 billion year old shells, went fossil digging, and also saw whale bones and a Giant Sea Cow that were found right here in San Diego that were 42 million years old! Matthew especially loved this as this was the same museum that we saw the Feathered Dinosaur exhibit when it was here last year! For more details on the Feathered Dinosaurs, you can visit this website: http://www.sdnhm.org/exhibits/feathered/index.html
Thursday, March 10, 2005 The baby Hamsters have arrived! Since I have not had time to post that far back yet, In February, just after Anthony's 7th birthday, with the birthday money he got from his Poppie and Grandma, he chose to buy a hamster. Hammy is his name. Well, actually Speeder is his name but his nickname and what we all call him is Hammy! Anyhow, the next day Matthew said he wanted a girl hamster so that they could breed them and have babies! Aaron and I looked at each other and went Oy Vey! and O.K.!:) So, we have been learning and reading all about hamsters (about type of hamsters, feeding and caring of hamsters etc.) with Matthew and Anthony, just as Chris did when we had two hamsters for him. The difference this time is Chris has gotten to learn just like all of us have, about the breeding aspect which we never did with his hamsters as they were both girls! Thus came Claire into our lives!:)
The two of them, Claire and Hammy, are very connected, and are
very much in hamster love!:) Here is a picture of the two love
birds!
In fact they are so connected that about two weeks ago, when Hammy was out in Matthew's room and got lost in there Claire was panicking, as she was missing him and wanted him there! It was so cute how she was looking for him! Well now we suspected a few weeks ago that Claire might be pregnant, because her backside was a bit bigger and more rounded, however, we were not totally sure. And then today, (while I was in the bathtub no less! LOL!) Anthony came in screaming, "THE BABIES ARE HERE!! THE BABIES ARE HERE!" Needless to say my bath was short lived!:) LOL! And SO here they are (the picture is a bit blurry but it was the best shot I could get because of the cage size and the fact that we learned that for the first two weeks we are not really supposed to bother momma and babies as in fright she may harm them!)
Wednesday, March 9, 2005 WOW! OH WOW! What a day today!
Today was our homelearning parkday. Anthony found a 4 leaf clover! YEP!
A four leaf clover! What are the chances of that happening?! I know I
never have found one in my lifetime, that I can remember anyways!:) WAY
COOL! Here is a picture of it!
We made some new friends, as two new mom's joined our group this week! Our homelearning parkday group is just getting bigger and bigger! We have 34 families now, and that makes about 60 children at least from ages 5 months all the way up to 20 years old! We love the wonderful mix of ages our group has and our children all play so well together! We have such an awesome group!:) It was SO awesome too, as Matthew said "We all worked together Mom!" and they made this GIGANTIC hole in the sand that they all played in imagination play! Of course Matthew was COVERED from head to toe in sand, as was Anthony, so it was in the tub when they got home! BUT what fun they had!:) I wish I would have brought the camera! Hopefully, they will make it again next week and I can take a picture of it!:)
Tuesday, March 8, 2005 Today was a restful day at home. We took the dogs out to our park across the street and played with them. We played baseball and frisbee too! Anthony made up his own Math on a piece of paper, multiplication and division on his own. Matthew learned to read the words effective, super, and solar beam on his pokemon game on the internet that he plays. He has been really into reading bigger words lately, and is so excited when he can. He does not usually make a big deal of telling anyone because he does not want to be put on the spot with someone trying to "test" him to see if he can read. As Aaron said to Chris a few weeks back when Chris was saying something jokingly about Matthew reading, Aaron told him "Hey Chris, leave him be, when he is ready to read it, he will, he has his whole life to learn!" Four and five digit addition and subtraction seem to be the focus still with the ever increasing Yu-Gi-Oh cards we have and the duels that take place nightly. I love to sit and watch the boys strategize with each other and learn from each other the game, the math, the reading, the critical thinking, and all of the learning that goes with it.:) In continuing our learning of the Native American traditions and customs, Chris and I had a wonderful time at our weekly Shamanism class. This week we learned of the 24 webbed Mesa's that the Apache Indian's use in the Native American healings and ceremonies. Normally Collete "Ladyhawk" instructs the class, but since she was sick, we were happy and proud to have Lynda and Maria Yraceburu to instruct this week. Lynda and Maria are both such wonderful beautiful souls. More about them can be found at their website at http://www.followingancestors.net/ In continuing with our Native American learning, towards the end of the month on the 26th, Matthew and Anthony will get to being in a similar once a month class beginning then, where they will learn of the Shamanic ways and of drumming, reading, customs, rituals, and Native American dance!:)
Monday, March 7, 2005 Today was an all-day playdate at a friend's house. We explored some exercise learning with a trampoline, some new board games for learning spelling, some older board games that of Monopoly (one of the boys favorites!:) and enjoyed the wonderful company of friends. We also learned a bit about their religion, that of Mormonism and what their customs and traditions are. We left just as they were beginning their in-home evening of prayer and ritual that they do every Monday!:) Before we left this morning though, Chris spilled something (cannot remember now what it was!:) on our bed, and it came out in the shape of a dolphin or a whale it looks like! We all thought it was REALLY cool,
so Chris took a picture of it!:)
Saturday, March 5, 2005 Today Chris and Aaron went to Pomona to a Yu-Gi-Oh tournament. They did really well considering there were like 400 people there! Chris placed 175th and Aaron I think 150 something, I forget now!:) While the boys were in Pomona, Anthony worked on a bit of geometry and symmetry building card houses!
Friday, March 4, 2005 WOW! She blinded me with Science! How cool is this! Today arrived our tuning forks! I got them for a dual purpose! First so we could learn about sound and vibration, and also for the vibrational healing work that I do! Here is what they look like in their case!
We really enjoyed playing with them and all of the various vibrations and sounds that they make. They are one whole octave of learning fun. It is great to learn about the musical notes that they correspond with as well!:) Matthew even took the F note and the C notes and made his own tuning fork songs with them which he emailed to me in a file!:) That video and audio making software that Santa brought Matthew and Anthony this year, sure has provided alot of learning opportunities. This makes I think 6 videos and audios he has made with it so far since they got it for Christmas!:) Thursday, March 3, 2005 YUM! YUM! Guess what we learned about today! All about how Peeps are made!:) We got to take the virtual tour! You can too at http://www.marshmallowpeeps.com/about/factory_tour.html AND ironically, guess what Aaron brought home tonight, when he went to the store to get fixings for dinner......You guessed it! PEEPS! Tuesday, March 1, 2005 To kick off the new month, tonight in our Shamanism class, Chris and I learned an ancient Native American ceremony called a Temescal. In this ceremony, we felt, tasted, and learned to steam 7 various ancient herbs. Mullein, Snakeroot, Licorice, sage, sweetgrass and others. We also learned of smudging, ancient chants and healings with natural stones, as well as, Native American dance and instrument playing. The purpose of this Native American healing ceremony is to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit ~ To cleanse and purify the body, riding of all of the body's toxins, to heal the mind by bringing it clarity, and cleanse the spirit. Temescal's are also known by the laymen term called a "Sweat Lodge". More information about the history of the Temescal and variations of the ceremony can be found at these websites: http://www.barefootsworld.net/sweatlodge.html http://www.cyberbohemia.com/Pages/originoftem.htm http://www.healthynewage.com/herbswet.html http://bearspiritvision.com/sweatlodge.htm
It was a powerful and healing experience on many levels for us both!
Monday, February 28, 2005 Anthony and Matthew today spent a good part of the day working on updating the creation of new levels to the video game that Anthony created a few days ago. They are both so amazing how they are able to program and make their own video games and the complex Math that goes into it! I cannot even figure it out! Chris is working on researching his PC business. He wants to have his own storefront like that of Fry's Electronics but a smaller version. He also wants to have PC repair and classes on web design and all of the technical computer stuff he knows that he can instruct in. Life Long Learning Book launch today, so hopefully from the sales of the book, we will be able to afford to fulfill his dream!:) In the meantime, he is researching out wholesale options and how much it will cost in a budget for start-up costs, business licenses, rent on a storefront etc. He will be researching for many hours and days to come!:)
Wednesday, February 23, 2005 Homelearning parkday today was AWESOME! It was so nice to be able to get out after all this rain we have been having here! We went to Felicita and the creek looked so beautiful, the trees and the grass looked so green!
The boys spent all afternoon climbing trees and rocks and playing in the creek!
We even brought Hammy and Claire to show everyone!:) See Chris is holding Hammy here!
Now you can see why we so love Felicita Park! It is so peaceful and beautiful! I will have to bring my camera again in the coming weeks and get pictures of the kids playing on the rocks, in the creek there where the waterfall is, and on the swing set! They have a really cool tire swing there too in the playground up above the creek! On the way home, Chris shot this picture of the sunset from the sunroof of my car! The cloud above the sun looks like that of an eagle or a bird soaring over the sun! It was the perfect ending to a beautiful day!
Saturday, February 19, 2005 Chris and I attended our first Native American drumming circle at Spirit Point Ranch tonight! WOW! What a magical evening! We learned the art of drumming and made alot of new friends! It was quite powerful! Chris really took a liking to one of the drums there He was just banging out a beat man and he was rockin' Indian Style! LOL! I am going to see if we can find some inexpensive drums somewhere in time for the next drumming circle next month. Spirit Point Ranch is just GORGEOUS! I cannot wait to come see it in the daytime. Even in the dark and the rain, it was still very peaceful and beautiful! You can check it out at http://www.spiritpoint.net
Thursday, February 17, 2005 Continuing on our learning all about rainbows, tonight when it got dark we started learning about rainbows and reflected light and how rainbows aren't just for making in the sunlight in the rain! Anthony took a bunch of my CD's and placed them on my desk under my lamp, and made some really cool rainbow designs! Chris and Matthew then joined in on the fun and I started taking a bunch of pictures! Here is one of the pictures we took!
Wednesday, February 16, 2005 We had no homelearning parkday today because of the rain!:( SO since we were all getting so tired of being cooped up in the house because of the rain, we went out for a drive! And guess what? We saw not one but two rainbows! We chased one until the end of it. Matthew and Anthony had heard of the legend of a pot of gold at the end of a rainbow, so we followed the rainbow. It actually ended in the hills about 8 miles or so from our house, not too far from a friend of ours house! Oh what fun that was! Of course, there was no pot of gold, and we could not actually stand in the end of it because it was too high in the hills into private property that we could not access, and then when we continued to drive it followed us for a time before hiding again behind the other side of the hills with the clouds over them, but HEY! It was really fun and we learned alot about what rainbows can and cannot do! And we BUSTED that Myth too! Should we send this to Myth Buster's on Discovery Channel?!:) LOL! We do like that show and watch it alot!:) Don't know what Myth Buster's is? Wanna know more? Check out http://dsc.discovery.com/fansites/mythbusters/mythbusters.html Lots of Science and History learning there! And some BUSTING too!:)
Monday, February 7, 2005 WOW! What happened today just blew me away! Last Tuesday in our Shamanism class, a friend gifted to me a goddess essential oil holder. I had not had a chance to show it to Matthew yet. All of the sudden, I am working on the computer and he came up to me and said "Mommy, I made this for you". I look up and my mouth dropped to the floor. It was an exact replica of the goddess that had been gifted to me and Matthew had not seen it as i had it tucked away in my pouch that I keep my healing stones in! Look at the picture we took of them!
More to come soon!:) Will be putting up pictures from the highlights of our learning from last year 2004 coming soon!:)
